Hugh Beach, recently retired professor of cultural anthropology at Uppsala University in Sweden, has donated his extensive collection of Sami books and materials to the Kathryn A. Martin Library, University of Minnesota Duluth.
The library has invited Professor Beach to speak on "Sami Identity and Resource Rights" at a Thursday afternoon lecture, 2 p.m. on May 17, in the library's fourth floor rotunda reading room.

Hugh is recognized world-wide for his studies of the Sami people and reindeer herding. He is the author of A Year in Lapland: Guest of the Reindeer Herders and numerous articles.
Join us in honoring Professor Beach for his generous gift and learn about his fascinating life and studies. Beach spoke at the library four years ago on the "long-term effects of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster on the Swedish Sami." He was raised in a Swedish-American family in the United States, and then took his B.A. in anthropology at Harvard and his Ph.D. at Uppsala University, Sweden.
A supper reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Sami Cultural Center of North America, 4915 E. Superior St., #205, Duluth, will follow later in the day and will include an informal presentation honoring Hugh Beach.
