A Message from the Director about Library Collections Cuts

A message from the library director outlines the impacts of the budget on library resources.

The library was assigned a 2.2% reallocation from our Operations & Maintenance budget for FY-2026, which will primarily impact our collections budget. In addition to this cut, the cost of our subscription resources (databases, journals, ebooks, videos, etc.) increases an average of 5% annually. Due to these factors, the library must make painful decisions regarding renewals and cancellations this year.

In balancing the many needs of our campus community, library leadership will make collections decisions that prioritize:

  • media or full-text content over search tools (i.e. indexes and abstracts);
  • content not available to us from other libraries through interlibrary loan; and
  • resources that allow us to keep access to purchased content even after cancellation.

The scope of these cuts will impact resources considered core across all departments. Because subscriptions start at different times of the year, the library will be finalizing decisions on an ongoing basis. See below for a current list of confirmed cancellations. Book budgets will also be reduced.

We are committed to continuing our support for faculty, staff, and students, including interlibrary loan service; consultations with liaison librarians about research, open access materials, course materials, and assignment design; continued purchasing of course ebooks and streaming videos
