The Kathryn A. Martin Library, in coordination with One Book Northland, announces a free showing of the film Sami Blood on Monday, April 16, at 6:30 p.m. in Solon Campus Center 120. Coffee, tea, and light refreshments will be served.
Sami Blood, an award-winning film, is set in Sweden in the 1930s. It concerns a 14-year-old girl who experiences prejudice at a nomad school for Sami children and decides to escape her town and disavow her Sami heritage. The film’s cinematography is first rate, and the acting has been widely praised.
The film showing is one of many events related to the One Book Northland Community Read for 2018. The 2018 book selection is The Wind and the Drum by Katharine Johnson. The Wind and the Drum tells a tale of Sami reindeer herding culture in the 1670s and the clash between nomadic and settled cultures. All community members in northern Wisconsin and Minnesota are invited to read and discuss this enthralling work of fiction. An author talk is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, at Fitger’s Spirit of the North Theater.
