Unwind with Stress-Less Week in the library!

The week before finals is a very stress and anxiety inducing time for college students. Fifteen weeks of deadlines, cram sessions, responsibilities, and projects can coalesce into an emotional and tense time. The Kathryn A. Martin Library and a host of campus partners band together each semester to offer programs and activities designed to reduce and alleviate the mental toll of the semester.  Welcome to Stress-less Week Spring 2017, April 23-29!  All events are free to students.

Stress-less Kickoff

Sunday, April 23, 4 - 10 p.m.

Stay fueled and energized with free snacks, prizes, coffee, and wellness exercises in the 2nd floor Learning Commons!

Tutors (5-9), writing consultants (5-9), multimedia hub staff, and research librarians (6-8) will be on hand for help with those last-minute projects.

A Massage therapist will be on site from 4-6 p.m.; sign up on the 2nd floor by the research desk.

Free Coffee and Hot Cocoa

Monday, April 24, 8 a.m.

Get a caffeine or sugar rush as you start the day. Library staff will be slinging free coffee and hot cocoa on Monday and Friday at 8 a.m.! We will be there until the urn is dry.  

Stress Ball Make or Take

Monday, April 24, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Library Entrance

Make, decorate, or take a stress ball! Everyone will get a chance to build their own stress management tool (or just take a prefab one). Sponsored by UMD Health Services.

CALM - Stress Reductions Techniques

Monday, April 24, 2 p.m.- 3 p.m., L119

Mindfulness, breath work, meditation and guided imagery sessions for those seeking calm and peace.

Zoomobile

Tuesday, April 25, 1-3 p.m.

Some of the zoo's smallest and cutest animals will provide a welcome distraction from studying. The Lake Superior Zoo visits UMD with a tortoise, chinchilla, bunny, hedgehog, and other tiny animals.

CALM - Stress Reductions Techniques

Yoga

Tuesday, April 25, 8 p.m.

Take a yoga break with the UMD Yoga Club and enter a raffle to win a free yoga mat! No previous yoga experience necessary, mats provided. Located in the Spin Room of the Sports Center.

Pet Away Worry & Stress (PAWS)

Wednesday, April 26, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Stop by and stress less with some lovable canines, cats (and sometimes mini-horses)! Representatives from Humane Educators and Animal Allies will be on campus with animals to play with, hold, and pet! Sponsored by Animal Allies, KUMD, Kathryn A. Martin Library, UMD Employee Wellness, and Health Services. Volunteer support provided by SERVE.

Massage

Wednesday, April  26, 1-3 p.m.

Unwind with a chair massage from RSOP's Nancy Schwerdt! She'll be set up on the 2nd floor of the library, providing five minutes of massage and stretches. Space is limited, and signup will be available at 1 p.m. that day.

Smoothies

Thursday, April 27, 11 a.m.

Gain energy and focus with a green smoothie from UMD Health Services! Made fresh while you wait! Quantities are limited, so get here early.

SunSpot Bus 

Thursday, April 27, 11 a.m. -1 p.m., Circle Drive outside of library

Get a shot of vitamin D and boost your serotonin with the SunSpot Bus. Parked outside of the Library, the SunSpot will provide beneficial UV light to boost happiness and reduce anxiety.  Special thanks to UMD Health Services and the UMD Student Association for funding this visit.

Color the Night AWAY - presented by Access for ALL

 Free Pizza & Snacks + Coloring = stress reduction.

Free Coffee and Hot Cocoa

Friday, April 28, 8 a.m.

Events Occurring All Week 

  • Games, legos, and coloring! Take a break with a board game or some crayons! 
  • Arts and crafts: Take a break with some origami!
  • Take a guess with our coffee bean counting contest: Guess how many beans are in a jar, and enter to win a UMD Dining Services gift card!
