For the past few years, the library has been preparing for some major improvements to our spaces in the Annex building, which is currently home to Archives & Special Collections as well as our print periodicals collection (primarily journals and magazines). Although this work requires downsizing the footprint of our print periodicals collection, library staff view this task as an opportunity to evaluate titles based on the criteria set forth in our Collections Policy to ensure we are curating a collection that continues to serve current and future needs of library users.
An often unseen aspect of this work over the past few years has been identifying significant periodical titles that may better serve users in digital format, making them easier to search and access as well as filling in coverage gaps where we may be missing print issues. In 2022/2023, we added journal backfiles from JSTOR for 432 titles covering subjects such as archaeology, area studies (Asia, Latin America, Europe, Middle East), classical studies, communication, history, language and literature, law, philosophy, political science, and STEM.
This year, we are pleased to announce the addition of seven magazine archives for popular titles. Although these titles may already have some full text access in databases like EBSCO’s Academic Search Premier or Gale’s Academic OneFile, these aggregator databases are not always licensed to include access to pictures, advertisements, or other supplemental content that has historically made the print issues more useful for some research purposes. The new magazine archives provide access to completely digitized issues that allow you to page through or download articles to PDF.
