Borrow Materials

For information about borrowing if you are not a student or faculty/staff please see the information on the Community User borrowing page.

Find Materials

Locate materials to check out by searching the library catalog, or by browsing specific library collections.

Borrow

Please bring items for checkout to the Library Services Desk, located on the first floor of the library. Your U Card is your borrowing card, but you may use any photo ID to check out materials

Renew

For your convenience, we will automatically renew loans of three days or longer until items reach their final renewal date. Regular books checked out to a UMD undergraduate reach their end renewal date 6 months after checkout. For UMD graduate students, the end date for a regular book loan occurs 12 months after checkout. Best Sellers reach their end date 8 weeks after checkout. Other materials have shorter renewal terms. You must return materials by the final due date to avoid being billed for a lost item.

Materials loaned for shorter terms, such as course reserve items, do not have the automatic renewal feature. They must be returned by the time due.

You can renew your checked out items in three different ways:

Check My Library Account

Check your library account for due dates and to renew materials by logging in to "My Library Account" with your UMD username and password. Or you can stop by the Library Services desk or call 218-726-6120 during library open hours.

To request renewal of items borrowed through interlibrary loan, log in to your Interlibrary Loan (ILL) account.

Renewal periods are limited and vary depending on faculty or student status. Contact us if you need help or have questions about renewing.

Return Borrowed Items

You may return materials (1) in the return bin built into the Library Services Desk, (2) in the concourse hallway's return slot to the left of the library gate, (3) in the outdoor stainless steel book return near the library entrance, or (4) by mailing the items to the Kathryn A. Martin Library.

Any items checked out to your University account, including Twin Cities, Morris or Crookston materials, can be returned here or at any U of M library.

Late?

If books or journals become more than 30 days overdue, you will be billed a replacement charge of $100.

For information about fines, see Paying Fines and Fees.
