Borrow, Renew, and Return Materials

Who Can Apply?

Anyone not currently a student or employee of UMD can apply for a community card to borrow items from the Kathryn A. Martin Library. Please come to the Library Services Desk to sign up for a card.

Applicants for a community card between the ages of 14 and 18 may borrow through their parent or legal guardian's account as a proxy if the parent agrees to act as the primary cardholder.

Renewals

The library will automatically renew items until they reach their maximum loan period. Please see the table below for a list of loan periods. Items not returned 30 days past their due date will be billed as a lost item. For information, see Fines and Fees

You may renew items in the following ways:

  1. In person at the Library Services Desk,
  2. Calling 218-726-6120 during open hours; or
  3. Emailing library staff.

Return Borrowed Items

You may return items at any University of Minnesota library, or by mailing the items to the library at 416 Library Drive, Duluth, MN 55812.

There are three return bins on this campus:

Guest Computer

Guest Computer Table

Community users can get a guest computer card at the Library Services Desk. A limited number of computers are available on a first-come, first-served basis, for up to two hours per day.

For quick access to the catalog, we have "library catalog only" computers on the first and fourth floors of the library.

Guest printing is available with a Campus Cash Card, which can be purchased for $1 at the Cash-to-Card kiosk in the library. Black and white printing is 5 cents per page. Scanning is available at one of the computers; see the scanner for instructions.

The general public can access some of the UMD Open Access Databases from their own devices, while some databases can only be accessed from the guest computers. Some databases are not available to non-UMD users.

Users with laptops or other devices can use the UMD Guest Wireless Service for temporary internet access.

Additional Details

You may log out after a portion of your two hours and log back in later in the same day to use your remaining minutes. Unused minutes do not roll over to a future day.

You will be logged out automatically if there is no activity for five minutes. An alert will pop up when time is running out.

Save your work! Files must be saved to removable media such as a USB memory stick, not on the hard drive.
