The library automatically renews most loans (items with a loan period of 3 days or more) until a final due date is reached. For undergraduate students, this end date for a regular book loan occurs 6 months after checkout.
If an item is not returned by its final due date, it will be declared lost and a replacement fee will be added to the user’s account.
Item Billed as Lost?
If an item becomes more than 30 days overdue, it will be billed as a lost item. The replacement fee for a lost or unreturned item is $100. If you return an item with a lost status, the replacement fee will be deducted from your account.
If you have lost an item you borrowed from the Kathryn A. Martin Library, you may replace it instead of paying the $100 replacement fee. The replacement copy must be the same edition or newer and in excellent condition. The Overdues Specialist at the library will make the final decision whether a copy is an acceptable replacement. If accepted, the $100 replacement fee will be waived, and a processing fee of $15 will be applied.
Items with short-term loan periods will be billed as lost before they become 30 days overdue.
Items lost belonging to other campuses may be subject to different replacement cost fees and processes.
How to Pay
All library users may pay your fees at the Library Services Desk during hours when the library is open. Ask to speak with a Library Services Desk supervisor. Fees may be paid with a personal or bank check. The fee for processing a check from an account with insufficient funds is $20.
For students: fees will be transferred to your student account after 30 days past due and can be paid through the secure Pay UMD website along with tuition and other student fees.
For faculty & staff: fees will be transferred to University of Minnesota Accounts Receivable after 30 days past due and you will be sent a bill by mail.
To see the status of the items you have checked out, connect to "My Library Account." Log in with your Internet ID and password.
Is your library account blocked?
If a library user accumulates $15 or more in fees or has four or more items that are overdue, borrowing privileges will be automatically blocked.
If you have any questions, see a Library Services Desk staff member or call 218-726-6120.
