Donating to the Kathryn A. Martin Library

Kathryn A. Martin Library Policy

Monetary Donations

The Kathryn A. Martin Library welcomes monetary donations that enable us to enhance our collections and improve our services. Financial contributions in support of the library can be made through the UMD Friends of the Library. The Archives and Special Collections also welcomes financial contributions to support the growth, care, and stewardship of the collections.

Donating Library Materials

The library is unable to accept most donations of books and other material for the general collection. This is due to space constraints and the high cost of sorting, reviewing, and processing donated material. Please consider one of these other options for passing along your material: your local public library, used bookstores, or charitable organizations. UMD campus community members can also contact Facilities Management for assistance recycling materials.

Exceptions to this policy can be made in rare and limited cases, particularly if donated materials will help make our library more inclusive and increase representation in our collections, as outlined in the Library Equity Statement. Decisions about potential exceptions are made by library staff using the Collections Policy. To discuss a potential exception, please contact Kim Pittman, Research & Learning Team Manager, at [email protected] or 218-726-7829.

Donating Archival Materials

The library's Archives and Special Collections collects and preserves materials that document the history of the University of Minnesota Duluth and the surrounding region of Northern Minnesota. For more information on the types of materials collected by the archives, see Donating Materials to the Archives. To discuss a potential donation, please contact the archives at [email protected] or 218-726-8526.

Thank you for your interest in supporting the Kathryn A. Martin Library.
