The Kathryn A. Martin Library has focused on student well-being both out of organic interest and in tandem with University initiatives. It has held its ever-popular Stressless Week for many years–a week-long celebration of stress reduction activities for students as they gear up for finals week. It also recently completed a building refresh on the first, third, and fourth floors, which introduced brand new carpeting, reimagined lounge areas, and updated furniture designed for comfort - informed by student feedback. As the library deepens its commitment to student well-being, it offers other ways for students to engage in mindful activities, reduce stress, and address overall well-being. Whether you’re new to the library or just need a refresher, here are some of the resources and spaces offered in the library:
Spaces
- Meditation & Reflection Room (1st Floor): A quiet space available on a first-come, first-served basis. Equipped with floor padding, an area rug, sitting pillows, a shoe bench, and soft, battery-powered candle lighting. Pick up the key at the Library Services Desk to access the room.
- Accessible & Standing Desks: Designed to accommodate wheelchair users and active learners alike. Height-adjustable carrels are available throughout the library (clearly marked and kept open for seating/access). Standing desks are also integrated into select study rooms.
- Sensory Group Study Rooms (4th Floor): All fourth-floor study rooms are now equipped with sensory tools, including exercise balls, balance discs, weighted lap pads, white noise machines, and floor lamps. Combined with library-wide LED lighting upgrades, these rooms feature dimmable, adjustable overhead lights to customize your environment.
- Designated Noise Zones: Choose the environment that fits your workflow. The 1st and 2nd floors are designated Talk Zones, perfect for group work and active conversation. The 3rd and 4th floors are dedicated Quiet Zones reserved for focused, silent study.
- Cozy Corner: Mindful and stress-reducing passive activities are provided, such as coloring and puzzles. The space also includes throw pillows, weighted lap pads, and a weighted shoulder pad. This spot, located near the library's bestseller collection, is available anytime the library is open!
