Library Internship Policy

Overview

Internships are intended to provide an introduction to the range of career options available in an academic library. In addition, these positions are an opportunity for a student to gain practical experience in a work environment. With a focus on experiential learning, internships give students the opportunity to work with library staff in positions throughout the library and complete independent projects.

At this time, the Kathryn A. Martin Library will accept only University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) students seeking academic credit as interns. Priority will be given to third- and fourth-year students. Individual internships may have additional requirements. Students must register their internship as a course and have a faculty advisor.

Position Descriptions and Applications

Individual internships will offer differing work and learning opportunities. Available internships will vary depending on library needs and library staff capacity.

Available internships will be posted on the library website during the semester prior to the beginning of the internship, allowing students time to apply prior to the academic registration deadline.

Paperwork

Any student who will be interning with the library must complete the required paperwork. This includes the following:

  • Academic registration for the internship
  • Any paperwork required by the academic department sponsoring the internship
  • A background check (paid for by the library)
  • University of Minnesota information security awareness and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act training
  • UMD key agreement (if a locked workspace is to be made available)

Intern Expectations

  • Equity and Inclusion
  • Scheduling
    • Working together, the intern and supervisor will establish a consistent working schedule for the duration of the term in which the internship is to be completed. The schedule and structure of individual internships may vary based on the supervisor, area of library work, or specific projects assigned to the intern. In the event that adjustments to the schedule are required, the intern and the supervisor will discuss them in advance.
    • In the event of an unforeseen illness or emergency, the intern will be expected to contact the supervisor in a timely manner and notify the supervisor that they will have to miss work.
  • Workspace
    • Any workspace assigned to the intern should be used solely for library-related work.

Evaluation

The supervisor will provide the intern with regular, consistent feedback over the course of the internship. If the intern’s academic department requires a form or written assessment, the supervisor will provide it in a timely manner. Interns will also be provided with an opportunity to give feedback on their internship experience.
