Borrow Materials - Faculty and Staff

Faculty

Find Materials

Locate materials to check out by searching the library catalog, or by browsing specific library collections.

Borrow

Please bring items for checkout to the Circulation desk, located on the first floor of the library. Your U Card is your borrowing card, but you may use any photo ID to check out materials.

Renew

For your convenience, we will automatically renew loans of three days or longer until items reach their end renewal date. Regular books checked out to faculty or staff members will be renewed until employment ends, unless requested by another library user. Other materials have shorter renewal terms. You must return materials by the final due date.

Materials loaned for shorter periods, such as items on course reserve, do not have the automatic renewal feature.

You may renew materials in the following ways:

  • in person at the Circulation desk
  • by calling 218-726-6120 during hours when the library is open, and
  • online by using "My Account"—you must have a UMD Internet username and password to renew materials online.

You will not be able to renew a borrowed item if another user has requested it.

Interlibrary Loan Renewals

To request renewal of materials borrowed from libraries other than those in the University of Minnesota system, log in to your Interlibrary Loan account, and select "renew." Renewals should be requested before an item becomes due.

Late?

If books or journals become more than 30 days overdue, you will be billed a replacement charge of $100 plus a processing fee of $15. If you return an item with a "lost" status, the replacement and processing fees will be deducted from your bill. Items on short-term loan will be billed as lost even before they become 30 days overdue. Faculty members and staff of UMD do not accrue overdue fines.

For more information about fines, see Paying Fines and Fees.

Blocked or Barred Privileges?

You may be subject to the loss of borrowing privileges, as well as interlibrary loan privileges, in the following circumstances:

  • if you have fees for unreturned items in excess of $9.99
  • if four or more items become overdue
  • if interlibrary loan items checked out to you become overdue, lost, or damaged

Damaged?

Faculty and staff will be billed for damaged library materials. The faculty or staff member is responsible for paying these fees. Library privileges may be blocked due to fines.
