Display Space Guidelines

Interior Displays

Library display cases inside the library are designed to exhibit library collections, events, and themes related to library programming. Two of the standing display cases on the first floor are open so that visitors can easily browse the materials on display and choose items for checkout.

Concourse Display

The concourse display case outside the Kathryn A. Martin Library is available to campus and nonpartisan, nonprofit organizations at the discretion of the Library Director and the Library Communication & Events team. This case has a prominent location near the entrance to the Labovitz School of Business and Economics.

Requests will be considered based on the following guidelines:

  • Preference will be given to library-related displays and themes.
  • Preference will be given to organizations that provide services or programs to a campus-wide audience rather than to a single academic department.
  • Preference will be given to displays that enhance the campus environment for diverse populations.
  • Library-sponsored displays may be placed as often as needed.

Step 1: Fill out and submit the library display request form.

Displays change monthly, so plan to use the space for the entire month. Be ready for installation on the first day of the month and plan to remove items on the last day of the month (unless we ask you to extend your display time by another month).

Step 2: Gather materials for your display.

If you include items from the library’s collections, stop at the Circulation desk and ask that these items be checked out to the “UMD Library display case” location. Do not check them out on your own account. Be aware that patrons are permitted to check out circulating library items on display.

Step 3: Request the display case key at the Circulation desk.

If using the concourse display, request the display case key at the Circulation desk.

Be sure to include signage that lets viewers know the theme of your exhibit. Use other artifacts, items, or a colorful cloth on the bottom of the display case to add interest.

You may wish to make use of book stands and sign holders available for use in displays. We also have step stools to help you reach high areas.

Ask for assistance if you wish to reposition the shelving in the concourse display.

Step 4: At the end of the month, confirm the time when you will be removing your display.

We like to dust the display shelves before the next display is installed. If you used any tape to affix signs, please remove it when you dismantle your display.
